ASTHRDP Graduate Scholar's ConferenceMaster Yango presented her graduate thesis entitled Assessing the association of population structure of Aspergillus fumigatus with pathogen infectivity through genetic clustering and protein network analysis of the virulence genes and proteins in the 11th Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program (ASTHRDP) Graduate Scholar's Conference held last September 26-27, 2023.
Fungal Lab Interns for Midyear 2023University of Santo TomasDwight and Bernice were trained for all preparations required for the Antifungal Sensitivity Tests (AFST), including aseptic techniques, culture and maintenance, spore load standardization, preparations of antifungal solutions, media preparations, fungal inoculation, data analysis, and technical writing. University of the Philippines BaguioFor the Fungal Lab component of his internship, Jamin's work focused more on performing fungicide assays for isolates obtained from the Benguet region. This involved performing processes such as sample purification, PCR amplification, DNA Extraction, and Agarose Gel Electrophoresis. University of the Philippines TaclobanRian assisted in isolating, purifying, and identifying fungal isolates obtained from infected banana leaves with the goal of obtaining samples of P. fijiensis. His help was invaluable especially in the production of modified culture media and in the morphological identification of the numerous samples that the lab had.
Congratulations to the Graduates of 2023 Dr. Dacones bids her advisees farewell during the Institute of Biology Recognition Program for academic year 2023. "As we don our caps and gowns, our hearts tremble like delicate songbirds perched on the edge of a vast horizon, ready to take flight from the familiar nest of academia. With tearful farewells, we cast our dreams into the winds of the unknown." Polytechnic University of the Philippines SeminarDr. Dacones conducted a comprehensive workshop focused on guiding participants towards successful publication in International Journals. The workshop featured both instructive lectures covering diverse aspects of the publication process and practical exercises aimed at enhancing participants' existing research for publication readiness.
The Fungal Lab goes to BenguetSampling of various farms around the Benguet RegionThe Fungal Lab recently conducted a field trip to the Benguet region for sample collection as part of our ongoing studies. We covered various locations in the area, including Kibungan, Kapangan, La Trinidad, Atok, Buguias, and Bakun, gathering samples from a diverse range of crops such as strawberries, potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, and cabbage. Seminar hosted by the Benguet State University for the local communityFollowing our collection efforts, a brief seminar was organized, where Professor Latina and Dr. Dacones shared insights from their studies on nematodes and fungal pathogens to an audience that consisted of local government members, university faculty and staff, researchers, students, and regional farmers.
